Zhifuxuan Classroom, National School of Development, Peking UniversityIntroduction of Speaker
Yukon Huang was the World Bank’s Director for China and currently is a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington D.C. His research focuses on China’s economy and his book on “Why views differ so much on China’s economy” will be published by Oxford University Press. Dr. Huang is a featured commentator for the Financial Times on China and his articles are also seen frequently in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, New York Times, Foreign Affairs and Caixin. He has a PhD in economics from Princeton University and a BA from Yale University.Abstract
“Why do views on China’s economy differ so much?” One is as likely to read about China dominating the global economy as about its sinking under looming debt, property and equity market bubbles. Analytically, many believe that China’s growth process is unbalanced and its trade surpluses are seen as driving trade deficits with the US. There are increasing concerns about China’s technological strengths and that western companies are investing too much in China at the cost of jobs back home. Many worry that rampant corruption will hamper China’s growth prospects. Yet many of these perceptions are misleading or wrong.
